Downtown Bike Share Could Come to Fort Wayne

B-cycle

The City of Fort Wayne is exploring the possibility of installing a bike sharing system downtown and along the rivers.

B-cycle is a company that makes bikes available to rentin 41 cities across the U.S.

The system is part of the sharing economy, like Uber or Air BnB. Here’s how it works – sign up online, choose a bike from a public station, get on, and ride.

Daily or monthly passes are available, or in some cities you can pay as you go.

That’s what some graduates of Leadership Fort Wayne and City of Fort Wayne planners want to make happen downtown. The goal is to start with five stations docking 25 bikes throughout the city center and along the river.

Visit Fort Wayne’s Marketing Specialist John Felts says the trail system is the most popular feature of the city for tourists, who are always looking for more ways to utilize it. But representatives from the YMCA and Indiana Tech say accessible bikes would be valuable to people in their organizations as well.

While many questions about funding, operations, and feasibility still remain, the City has taken the first step towards the project. City leaders have committed $40,000 for a bike share system, contingent on eligibility for additional federal funds.

Initial set up of the project is expected to cost around $190,000, and could be completed as early as 2019.
